Statement on the postponement of E1

We welcome the news that the E1 settlement project’s tender deadline for 1234 housing units has been postponed by Israel’s Attorney General until after the election.

Whilst this is still only a temporary reprieve from the threat of E1, it nonetheless highlights that international attention is helping to keep the issue on the agenda.

We will continue to urge our government to apply what pressure it can to prevent E1 from being enacted. Members of the Israeli government have been clear that its explicit aim is to ‘bury the idea of a Palestinian state’ by disrupting the territorial contiguity between Ramallah, Bethlehem and East Jerusalem. E1 has been prevented in the past when it was met by an international coalition that opposed it. The current moment demands this united opposition once again.
