Today is Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day. We’re celebrating tonight with Rona Kenan in concert at JW3, hosted together with New Israel Fund UK.
Yesterday, Israel marked Yom Hazikaron – Israel’s Memorial Day, where the country stops to remember the many thousands of citizens who have been killed in wars and terror attacks. On Sunday evening, as Yom Hazikaron came in, we marked the day with a livestreaming of the joint Israeli-Palestinian Memorial Day Ceremony, organised by the Bereaved Families Forum & Combatants for Peace, before joining the communal Yom Hazikaron ceremony at JW3.
A new survey released by the Israel Democracy Institute for Yom Ha’atzmaut found that 71% of Israelis are optimistic about Israel’s future and 80% are proud to be Israeli. 69 years ago, Israel was founded as a country “based on the precepts of liberty, justice and peace taught by the Hebrew Prophets”. It is a uniquely human miracle that such a country exists at all.
It is because of how important that miracle of Israel’s existence is, how bound up our lives are with the Jewish state, that we work to promote an Israel at peace, and a political resolution to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians. The two days of Yom Ha’atzmaut and Yom Hazikaron are an opportunity to remind ourselves of what Israel means to us, and recommit ourselves to playing our part in Israel’s future.
