25/02/2020, LONDON The British-Jewish movement for a two-state solution in Israel-Palestine, Yachad, welcomes the UK government condemnation of Israel’s plans to expand settlements in southern Jerusalem.
The new Middle East Minister, James Cleverly, urged Israel to “to reverse this decision immediately.”
In a statement, the Minister said that the construction of “illegal” Settlement in Givat Hamatos and Har Homa “undermines the viability of a future Palestinian state with its capital in East Jerusalem”.
This statement is a response to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s announcement last week of plans to build 3,000 homes in a new Jewish neighborhood in East Jerusalem’s Givat Hamatos, in addition to another 2,200 housing units for Jews in the nearby Har Homa neighborhood.
Construction in Givat Hamatos is considered a red line among many, and in the past, the promotion of the plan has led to sharp international condemnations.
Yachad, which represents thousands of Zionist British Jews, said that it is “competently right” of the government to condemn Israel’s construction plans in Givat Hamatos.
Yachad’s spokesperson said:
“The government is competently right to condemn Israel’s construction plans in Givat Hamatos.
“This is a dangerous move that will only undermine the two-state solution as it will block the territorial contiguity between East Jerusalem and Bethlehem.
“True friends of Israel know that expanding settlements in the West Bank will put Israelis and Palestinians at risk and must speak up against it.”
