Yachad’s statement on the news of the death of Dr Saeb Erekat, a prominent Palestinian negotiator who died after contracting the coronavirus at the age of 65:

“We are saddened to hear that Dr Saeb Erekat died at Hadassah hospital in Jerusalem. Having contracted Covid-19, the disease posed a significant risk to him as a lung transplant recipient.
“A Palestinian chief negotiator, Erekat was an architect of the Oslo accords and was involved in all negotiations with Israel, including Camp David (2000) and Taba (2001).
“Erekat was a Palestinian patriot who devoted his life to advance Palestinian independence, end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and achieve peace through diplomacy. He was a firm believer that a two-state solution was the only means to achieve peace for all peoples of the region.
“We send our condolences to his family, friends, loved ones, and all those who worked alongside him to bring about peace.”
