Statement on the EHRC report into antisemitism in the Labour Party

29 October 2020
REMINDER: criticising Israel – its government’s policies, its West Bank settlements, its military occupation or its part in the blockade of Gaza – is not antisemitic. We do this regularly.
Holding Jews collectively responsible for these is however antisemitic.
Those who hold all Jews accountable for the actions of the Israeli government are not helping the cause of peace.
As the Palestinian ambassador to the UK Husam Zomlot said himself: “Nothing hurts the Palestinian cause more than antisemitism”.
Indeed, in 2018 our director Hannah Weisfeld and Labour MP Alex Sobel explained why there’s “zero chance” of the Labour Party ever being a credible critic of Israel until it adopts the accepted IHRA definition.
Today, we stand in solidarity with our courageous friends at The Jewish Labour Movement who refuse to choose between their Jewish identity and political home and continue to fight to eradicate antisemitism and all types of racism in the UK.
