Zionism: it’s time for students to speak up 03/09/13

Joel Fenster, Jewish News Online, 03/09/13
There is a different way of being a supporter of Israel emerging on campus, says third-year Cambridge University student Joel Fenster.
When I was younger, being a Zionist was simple. I knew when to sing the Hatikvah and what to say: Israel is the only democracy in the Middle East, there are countless Islamic countries and only one Jewish state, the land was barren before 1948, etc, etc.
I now know of course that the situation is far more complex than …

Israel’s Predictable Response To The E.U. 16/07/13

Hannah Weisfeld, Open Zion, 16/07/2013
The response of the Israeli political leadership when it comes to European foreign policy on Israel follows a totally predictable formula: don’t bother to take into account the specifics of a news story, but if it involves the Europeans, point the finger of blame elsewhere, or divert attention to other, more pressing global issues. But under no circumstances deal with the content. Today was no different. News broke of a new European guideline that was …

Hannah Weisfeld, Jewish News, 08/07/13 Over the next week or so, more than one thousand 16-year-old Jewish students board planes to Israel to take part in a four-week tour.
“Israel tour” is billed as the most significant Jewish identity-building experience for the next generation of the community. More than 50 percent of this age group take part in the experience every year, with a variety of youth movements – each with their own religious and ideological lens.
In the main, the most …

British gatekeepers of Zionism have shut the door on liberal Zionists 12/03/13

Hannah Weisfeld, Haaretz, 12/03/13
Who are the gatekeepers of Zionist discourse within the UK Jewish community? The dust is only now beginning to settle on a major division that has emerged within Anglo Jewry over just this issue.  Two weeks ago, the Zionist Federation, which describes itself as the “umbrella organization for the Zionist movement in the United Kingdom”, and has over 120 member organizations and over 50,000 affiliated members, rejected the application of Yachad, the …

JTA, 08/03/13
(JTA) — Britain’s Zionist Federation defended its decision not to admit a dovish group that defines itself as pro-Israel but opposes Israeli settlements.
Paul Charney, the federation president, said in a statement Thursday that the application by Yachad was rejected by “a clear majority” of the umbrella group’s national council.
“You need to show you are supporters of Israel and will defend Israel where needed,” Charney told the London …

If you truly love Israel, don’t bury it in unexamined cliché

Chas Newkey-Burden, Jewish Chronicle, March 8, 2013
Next time you take part in a debate about the Israeli-Palestinian situation, here’s how to spot the people who care more about point-scoring than progress: they will be the ones saying Israel does nothing right, and also the ones saying that Israel does nothing wrong.
I love Israel. I love her scenery, culture and food. Most of all, I love the vigour, innovation and loving forthrightness of her people. I think Israel’s supporters …

Zionists I would want on my side – 08/03/2013

David Aaronovitch, Jewish Chronicle, March 8, 2013
It’s been one of those fortnights. So much so that, in the bookshop at Jewish Book Week last Sunday, I spotted a coffee-table effort with an octopus on the cover and wearily thought “another tome on antisemitism”, before closer inspection showed it to be a book on Venetian cookery.
I’d spent two weeks, following a piece for The Times on the 10th anniversary of the invasion of Iraq, being subjected to a constant, low …
