Statement on terror attack at Ammunition Hill, 09/10/2016

10/10/2016
Yesterday, a Palestinian man killed two Israelis during a shooting spree at Ammunition Hill light rail station in Jerusalem. Our thoughts are with the victims, whose lives have been lost, and their families and loved ones, whose lives have been changed forever by this senseless violence. Their names are: Levana Malihi, 60, a Grandmother of 6, & First Sergeant Yosef Kirma, 29, a police officer. May their memories be a blessing.
This terror attack must be condemned in the strongest …

Shimon Peres (1923-2016)

Israel’s former President & Prime Minister Shimon Peres has died aged 93. The last of his generation of Israel’s founders in public life and a protégé of Israel’s first prime minister, David Ben Gurion, Peres was an iconic figure in Israel and around the world. A key architect of the Oslo accords and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, Peres leaves a legacy as a committed hawk who became a leading dove. As a vital figure in Israel’s defence and political establishment over the course of …

Dispatches from the Centre for Jewish Non-Violence Delegation

Emily Hilton, 20/07/16
For the past ten days I have been on the Centre for Jewish non-violence delegation, an organisation of diaspora Jews who want to do solidarity activism with Palestinian communities living in the West Bank in order to challenge the Occupation. As a Jew and as someone who has been engaged with Israel for most of my life, I feel that the Occupation challenges the moral fibre of what it means to be Jewish and to support Israel. It is for this reason, having been strongly …

Response to Chakrabarti Inquiry Report on Anti-Semitism

30/06/16: We welcome the strong statements in the Chakrabarti Inquiry report against the use of “Zio” & “Zionist” as a pejorative, references to Hitler and the Nazis in relation to Israel and the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and stereotyping of Jews. However, the important test now is for a change of culture in the Labour Party and in wider progressive circles to ensure, in Chakrabarti’s words, “a truly welcoming environment” for Jewish people. That is the measure by which …

Yachad Comment: Agriculture minister Uri Ariel suggests transfer of Palestinians from Area C

08/06/16
Utterly unacceptable proposal from Agriculture minister Uri Ariel (Bayit Yehudi) to “remove a few thousand Arabs” from Area C of the West Bank – the 60% of West Bank land entirely controlled by Israel – and then annex it. In reality, there are around 300,000 Palestinians living in Area C.
Minister Ariel’s suggestion is morally wrong, illegal, and – in practical terms – impossible.
Context: “Minister: Empty West Bank Area C of …

What hope the fight against antisemitism when Malia Bouattia leads the NUS?

Yachad director Hannah Weisfeld, The Guardian, 22/04/16
The furore around Malia Bouattia’s election as the new president of the National Union of Students has yet to die down. Accusations of antisemitism dogged her campaign and continue to do so, with Cambridge University’s union threatening to disaffiliate from the NUS altogether. Bouattia’s defence of her comments are, broadly, that it is Zionism she takes issue with and not Jews. And it is for this reason that she felt the need to …

Malia Bouattia elected NUS president

The election of a National Union of Students president who has endorsed “armed struggle” – i.e. terrorism – and decried “Zionist-led media” and “Zionist and neo-con lobbies” is deeply troubling. We work with Jewish students at campuses across the country to ensure that a strong pro-Israel, pro-peace voice is heard. We need to listen to the voices of Jewish students from across the religious and political spectrum who have expressed their concerns …
