The election of a National Union of Students president who has endorsed “armed struggle” – i.e. terrorism – and decried “Zionist-led media” and “Zionist and neo-con lobbies” is deeply troubling. We work with Jewish students at campuses across the country to ensure that a strong pro-Israel, pro-peace voice is heard. We need to listen to the voices of Jewish students from across the religious and political spectrum who have expressed their concerns to Malia Bouattia and received wholly unsatisfactory responses. It was particularly jarring on a day when NUS voted to do more to combat anti-Semitism on campus. It is important now that NUS takes immediate action to ensure that Jewish students are still welcome in the student movement.
