Michael Sfard has worked for decades to obtain justice for those who have suffered in a multiple of ways as a direct result of Israel’s ongoing occupation.
On Monday 2nd July Sfard will discuss his powerful and riveting new book ‘The Wall and the Gate’, which examines the core ethics of legal human rights work in Israel, with award-wining journalist, Jonathan Freedland.
Sfard had recently challenged the IDF’s open fire regulations on the Israel-Gaza border in the Israeli Supreme Court and is currently challenging the constitutionality of the ‘Legalisation Bill’ which seeks to confiscate thousands of acres of privately owned Palestinian land and allocate it for settlers.
Sfard received the Emil Grunzweig Human Rights Award and an Open Society Fellowship. His writing on human rights has appeared in The New York Times, Haaretz, The Independent, and Foreign Policy.
Yachad Director, Hannah Weisfeld, said:
“We are proud to be hosting one of Israel’s leading human rights lawyer for a series of events in the UK.
“Sfard’s ground-breaking work to protect human rights that are under threat as a result of occupation is what helps keep hope alive. It is essential that members of our community understand the impact of occupation, and there is no better person to explain this than Michael Sfard”
New Israel Fund CEO, Adam Ognall, said:
“For decades, Michael Sfard has worked with New Israel Fund and our grantees to mount legal challenges to human rights violations and to keep the occupation in Israel’s public discourse.
“Sfard’s work exemplifies our strategy to support Israelis opposed to the occupation and provide them with space to succeed, while showing all Israelis what takes place behind the literal and figurative wall that separates them from their Palestinian neighbours. This work is central to our mission of protecting human rights for all people living under Israel’s control.”
Yachad was founded in 2011 to mobilise British Jews in support of a political resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, through education, debate and advocacy.
The New Israel Fund is the leading organization advancing and defending democracy in Israel.
